Former Madison High School star aims to broaden his game between the tackles as SDSU strives for 3-0 start

How fast is San Diego State running back Kenan Christon? For one, he was just the third high-schooler to win the 100- and 200-meter sprint double at California’s state meet.

Speed, however, has been a double-edged reputational sword for Christon, a former Madison High School star who initially suited up for USC. On Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium, he will face the other program he nearly joined in UCLA. If the showing process finds its stride against UCLA, there will be a full circle feel to his college football path. Though he initially chose the Trojans, Christon very easily could have worn Bruin blue.“I was kind of pulled away from San Diego State,” Christon said. “One of my high school coaches was talking to a coach that was here, I don’t remember his name. He said I was just a track guy who played football. I didn’t like that.

Christon had “20-something” scholarship offers out of high school, including far-flung bluebloods like Alabama and Notre Dame. He reasoned that his sub-200-pound frame was not a fit in programs anchored around hulking backs. The speed, though, could play anywhere.“When I’m playing and it’s bunched up, I know I can outrun somebody outside, why would I not do that?” said Christon, who is listed at 5-10, 190 pounds. “There are a lot of guys who can’t do that.
