The fight over funding for special education, however, doesn’t fall neatly along party lines.
Young played a key role in helping districts better demand the resources they need. In 2021, she spearheaded a major update to the TEA dyslexia handbook, aligning its guidelines for evaluating students with federal ones. In the nine months after the change went into effect in February 2022, she said, more than 45,000 students with learning disabilities were properly identified, making them eligible for federally mandated resources.
