Take the family cycling on a rail trail through rustic Andalusia and savour the simple joys of rolling through the landscape.

Cycling into the darkness of our first tunnel, my three teenagers seem to be on a high. It’s been a trip of cities so far; high-brow museums, tapas restaurants and crowded markets. Sure, they’ve mostly enjoyed it, but now they’re zooming through the Spanish countryside on bikes, they’re relishing some speed. The question prompts bizarre dog noises from the kids, and as we hurtle through the next 29 disused railway tunnels, they’re barking, growling, whining , which echoes superbly.

Although the restaurant was pleasant, in the morning, we realise the breakfast room is legendary. The mostly local customers are nattering over coffee and big screen breakfast television. They’re crunching into, a crispy sheet of fried dough, and in the name of research, we’re soon dunking ours into hot chocolate.

Further on, a jangling sound floats up the valley. My daughter spots the goats, each one with a bell around its belly. Soon a vast herd emerges, munching their way upriver. We expect to spot a goat herder, but all we see is a dog, taking great care of its charges. It feels like a scene that may have played out for centuries.
