Space Center Houston on Tuesday unveiled its new Facilities Master Plan, designed to support research and training in the growing space industry – and give visitors a chance to observe both.
The centerpiece Space Center Houston's expansion will bee Lunar Mars Immersive Experience and Learning Center, which is to include simulated cosmic terrains of the Moon and Mars.Houstonians who want to see astronauts bobbing along the lunar or Martian surfaces will someday be able to do so, in a way -- without being sponsored by a billionaire, or encountering any pesky time lags.
It’s all part of an ongoing “metamorphosis” of Space Center Houston, explained president and CEO William Harris, who joined the nonprofit in 2016 with that goal in mind. The centerpiece of the new facility will be the Lunar Mars Immersive Experience and Learning Center on a 100-acre site behind the existing facility. Plans call for two enclosed simulated cosmic terrains, of the Moon and Mars, in inflatable domes as well as modular surface labs and learning centers. Space fans will be able to observe the astronaut training for themselves, via an elevated exhibit hall overlooking the two alien terrains.
“We intend to be the global hub for human space exploration going forward, for the next sixty years, and that is a quite audacious goal,” Douglas Terrier, associate director for vision and strategy at the Johnson Space Center, said at Tuesday's event.
