Event was held at the Lázaro Cárdenas high school in Tijuana; goal was to give students opportunity to share moment with friends and family who cannot cross border to the U.S.

A few weeks ago, Elizabeth Mendoza had her graduation ceremony at the Southwestern College campus in Chula Vista. Although she was able to celebrate her accomplishment with her friends and two daughters, one of the most important people in her life couldn’t be there: her husband, who had been unable to cross the border since he was deported six years ago.

Elizabeth Mendoza Ortega is greeted by her husband Samuel García after the graduation ceremony at the Lázaro Cárdenas high school in Tijuana. In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, she decided to enroll in Southwestern College, which then offered online classes. She acknowledged that she hesitated if she could do it at first, since she thought her English was not good enough.

Mendoza was one of the 65 cross-border students who participated in the emotional and historic commencement ceremony in Tijuana. “This is a way to break down the borders that exist between our cities and be able to provide opportunities that didn’t exist before,” Alcantar said. Her boyfriend couldn’t attend her May graduation because he cannot cross to the U.S., but he was with her throughout Thursday.
