Freezing temperature tips ranged from shelter availability, pet care advice, to the danger from falling iguanas.
CNN cited the Weather Prediction Center, which said, “Much of the state will remain mostly clear and frigid tonight with the chance for scattered to isolated falling iguanas from trees due to subfreezing temperatures that may temporarily paralyze them.”cited a tweet posted on Sunday by the National Weather Service Miami-South Florida that warned: “Iguanas are cold-blooded. They slow down or become immobile when temps drop into the 40s . They may fall from trees, but they are not dead.
While Lopiano-Kopsaftis, said her yard had been “littered with frozen iguanas,” toward the end of the video she said, “I’m happy to report they have all recovered!” “It is so cold in Florida, they are setting record temperatures and you know they’re afraid of the iguanas falling off the trees,” said Janice Dean, Senior Meteorologist at. “They don’t freeze, they don’t die, but they do kind of go into a state of hibernation, it’s crazy.”
Dean explained the drastic weather change is not particularly harmful to iguanas, but males can grow to nearly 5-feet long and weigh nearly 20 pounds, so residents should be watchful of them.noted iguanas are an invasive species, well accustomed to the trees of South Florida. While they go into a suspended animation mode when it gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and fall to the ground, they usually wake up with the sun’s warmth.
“There’s more chance of getting hit by a coconut,” he said. “If you go out walking the next day you might see lying on the ground by the trees.”
