Harmon Kelley — South Side doctor and a renowned African American art collector — has died
and is renowned as one of the nation’s collectors of African American Art, has died of a heart attack. He was 77.
In 2011, he was awarded the Southside Chamber of Commerce Legends Award in recognition of his service and commitment to the South Side. Last year, Kelley was honored with the C.A. Whittier Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1963, Kelley graduated from O.J. Thomas High School as valedictorian of his class. He attended Prairie View A&M University, where he graduated cum laude. Kelley was in the Army ROTC program and commissioned as an officer in the United States Army.While studying at the university, he met his future wife, Harriet O’Bannon. They were married on June 21, 1969.
“We became completely fascinated,” Kelley said, in the San Antonio Public Library Foundation’s video series, “Voices of San Antonio.” “We had never seen any art by Black Americans that looked like that.”
