South African reforms need gentle voter kicking edwardcropley

South Africans vote on May 8 in the first general election since President Cyril Ramaphosa replaced the scandal-plagued Jacob Zuma as leader of the ruling African National Congress in 2018.

The ANC has won every election since the end of apartheid in 1994. In 2014, it won 62 percent of the vote, against 22 percent for the Democratic Alliance, the main opposition party. All major opinion polls predict that the ANC will retain its outright majority. Surveys released at the end of April by Ipsos and Citizen Surveys pointed to 61 percent support. A poll by the Institute of Race Relations suggested the ANC’s majority might drop to just 51 percent.
