The President Cyril Ramaphosa administration has decided to cut the budget of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in the run-up to an election year. However, more money has been allocated to political parties, raising concerns about the future of local government elections in 2026.

In the run-up to an election year, the President Cyril Ramaphosa administration thought it wise to cut the Electoral Commission of South Africa 's (IEC) budget, but found more money for political parties . While the IEC would be able to absorb the cuts to ensure a"decent election" on 29 May thanks to the retained surplus from the previous year (pending Treasury approval), the further budget cut s over the medium-term mean that the 2026 local government elections are imperilled.

Treasury could, however,"pencil in" an additional R200 million for the current financial year for the Political Party Fund – meaning the political parties currently represented in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures will get their share of taxpayers' money, with the lion's share going to the governing ANC.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
