Sound of Freedom is still in theaters.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Sound of Freedom director Alejandro Monteverde and co-writer Rod Barr attempt to push back the controversies surrounding the movie. Released in American theaters on July 4, the film quickly became one of the most profitable independent movies of the year, outpacing Hollywood blockbusters, such as Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning - Part One and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Writing a guest piece on The Hollywood Reporter, Monteverde and Barr now speak out against Sound of Freedom's multiple controversies, stating that their sole intention was to raise awareness of the horrors of child trafficking. The filmmakers state that the film was written in 2015 and shot in 2018, well before QAnon theories emerged. They also explain that they had never wanted to take any political stance on the matter.
The movie has also been unjustly associated with certain extreme conspiracy theories. We wrote the movie in 2015 and shot it in 2018, well before anyone involved had ever heard of such theories. It is therefore literally impossible for the movie to reference these theories, and anyone who has seen the movie knows it does not.
The Sound of Freedom Controversies Explained Before Sound of Freedom was released, Caviezel had openly embraced QAnon conspiracy theories while speaking at a conference in 2021, where he echoed certain areas, including the alleged "adrenochroming" of children. Tim Ballard himself, the real-life subject the movie depicts, also asserted certain elements of QAnon while simultaneously denying Operation Underground Railroad's connection to the movement.
Sound of Freedom has also been openly embraced by many far-right public figures, including Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, Steve Bannon, and former President Donald Trump, with the latter hosting a special screening at his Bedminster Golf Club with Caviezel and Ballard in attendance.
