Sony revealed plans for new movie adaptations of its popular gaming franchises, including Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima.
Sony has big Hollywood plans for its hit gaming franchises. The PlayStation 5 maker announced a series of new movie spin-offs at CES 2025 this week, including movie versions of Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn, as well as an anime spin-off of Ghost of Tsushima.
Horizon Zero Dawn, a game about fighting giant robotic monsters that have taken over earth, will be brought to the big screen through a partnership between PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures, Sony announced onstage at its CES press conference on Monday. The Helldivers adaptation, meanwhile, will be made by Sony Pictures. Neither has a projected release date yet, which makes sense at least in Helldivers’ case. No one expected it to be such a big hit just a year ago. Of course, Helldivers 2, a militaristic parody of a futuristic fascist empire fighting off alien invaders, is sort of already a movie. It’s called Starship Troopers, the Paul Verhoeven action comedy based on the sci-fi novel by Robert Heinlein. Then again, this wouldn’t be the first time Sony made a movie from a game that’s loosely inspired by another movie. That is, after all, effectively what the Uncharted adaptation was, which starred Tom Holland as the Indiana Jones-esque treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Sony also revealed that Ghost of Tsushima will be getting an anime series called Legends. It’s being made for the streaming service Crunchyroll by Aniplex, the studio behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and directed by Takanobu Mizuno, known for Star Wars: Visions -“The Duel.” It’s a ways off, though, as Ghost of Tsushima: Legends isn’t set to release until 2027. In the meantime, the 2020 game’s sequel, Ghost of Yotei, is set to arrive on PS5 late this year
