Just seven of the 47 people in intensive care units across the county are COVID-19 patients.
Sonoma County is the first Bay Area county to restrict gatherings in response to the spread of the omicron variant in the region.indoor gatherings of more than 50 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 100 people while asking residents to"stay home as much as possible for the next 30 days and limit interactions with those outside of their immediate household."
“Our case rates are at their highest level since the pandemic began and our hospitalizations are climbing at an alarming rate as well,” health officer Dr. Sundari Mase said in a statement. “We are seeing widespread transmission occurring within unvaccinated groups as well as some transmission among vaccinated individuals.”
Sonoma County estimates that 78% of residents over the age are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The new health order defines a gathering"as any public or private event or convening that brings people together in a single room or single space at the same time, such as in an auditorium, gymnasium, stadium, arena, large conference room, wedding venue, meeting hall, or any other indoor or outdoor space.
Mase cited not wanting hospitals to be overwhelmed as justification for the new restrictions, and theshows that the number of COVID-19-positive patients has matched levels seen in the summer's delta-variant-driven wave — though it is unclear how many of those hospitalizations are"incidental positives" where patients in the hospital for other reasons are found to have COVID-19 and counted towards COVID-19 hospitalizations.
