High school student athletes surround Willie Mitchell after he spoke at Judson High School on Wednesday. For Black History Month the school hosted Black athletes who played in the Prairie View Interscholastic League. The league was the governing body for academic, athletic and musical competitions for Black schools across Texas during segregation from 1920 to 1970. Mitchell played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the first Super Bowl in 1966.
All of the athletes got their start playing in the Prairie View Interscholastic League that governed sports and academics in Texas from 1920 to 1970 during the segregation era. “You’d be surprised that nobody knew there was no place for the Black high schools in Texas during segregation,” she said. “During that time, it was 500 Black high schools at one point.”
His brother, Ed Glosson, owned the San Antonio Register newspaper and works at the Goodwill medical records office. He talked of traveling 200 miles to play a football game. Long bus rides and returning home late at night wasn’t a hindrance — the players were proud of playing for their city.
