Somers: Without Chris Paul and Devin Booker, the rest of the Suns have to become just a little bit better. And that should help them in the long run.

For the last couple years, the Suns have been a team that danced like no one was watching, including early last season, when, literally, no one was allowed in the building to watch.

The Suns missed him, and even though they beat the Trail Blazers by 30 points Wednesday, they missed Paul and Booker, too. Pre-game, no one was saying they wouldn’t. Post-game, no one was saying they didn’t.But the Suns settled in and did what they have to do for however long Paul and Booker are out: beat inferior opponents and steal some wins against the better ones.

It’s not. Booker was at practice on Tuesday, which is a reminder of how quickly fortunes can turn, not necessarily now, when there is plenty of time for recovery, but when the playoffs begin in April. That was the case Wednesday. Six Suns scored in double figures, led by Johnson’s 20 points. They had 32 assists, a sign the ball was moving, and just as important to Williams, the defense in the second half was better than it had been in the previous three games since the All-Star break.
