Too often, queer-led shows focus on characters living in major cities. This HBO drama was a welcome break from that.

So this year, we are giving our editors a last-minute opportunity to plug the things that maybe got away. See all the things you really should have read, watched, or listened to—as well as more of our year in review coverage—In Hollywood, queer adult stories deemed worth telling have long been inextricably linked with cosmopolitanism. Queer-focused television shows are in woefully short supply, but even more scarce are queer protagonists who do not live in New York, LA, or San Francisco.

But don’t worry. For all of the show’s explorations of grief and otherness, there are also scenes of ecstatic joy strewn throughout, including Sam and Joel singing a pitchy version of “Don’t Give Up” by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush; Sam stalking her living sister’s husband as a form of protection after he rouses her suspicions; and any scene with Murray Hill as the trans soil scientist Fred Rocco.

There is a beat before a woman replies, “That’s called Stockholm syndrome.” It is the perfect encapsulation of whatever I feel when I return to my own religion-loving hometown—something equal parts bitter and sweet.
