Some air pollutants in Houston and Harris County communities were three times beyond what the Environmental Protection Agency deems allowable, an air quality study found.
“All of the communities that we do this program in are considered environmental justice communities — they are predominantly minority, predominantly people of color, predominantly economically challenged, marginalized communities,” D’Souza said. “That’s pretty much why we chose these communities to do this program to begin with, because we know they have been historically overlooked by regulatory agencies.
“I would say it's definitely a combination of human factors like industrial activity, the amount of traffic we have on the roads, also the seasonal climate influences as well,” he said.Particulate matter in Galena Park/Jacinto City was also found to exceed the annual EPA standard levels for eight months out of the year. In the data, the highest levels of fine particulate matter recorded was near Independent Texas Recyclers in Near Northside/Northline.
