In a tweet posted on the Fourth of July, Rep. Cori Bush said, “The Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn’t recognize Black people as human. Today is a great day to demand Reparations Now.”The anti-American and anti-freedom messages in this tweet are clear.
She labels them as mere “enslavers,” and disrespects the efforts that so many Americans made to free us from unjust rule. In addition, she stoops down to a level where she demands reparations for black people by openly declaring that Independence Day is the perfect tool to do so. Bush needs a history lesson because the signing of the Declaration of Independence gave rise to the abolitionist movement, which ultimately freed the slaves.
Through this tweet, Bowman aims to eliminate the angle of freedom from Independence Day and inject a slavery-attached meaning of suffering.
