JOHOR BARU: Some 31,000 pre-schoolers from 1,781 government-run kindergartens are expected to start classes beginning Wednesday (July 1).

National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique said so far 41 nurseries under her ministry with 947 children had been running since June 16, adding that kindergartens would reopen with the new standard operating procedure .

"We have also channeled some RM2.44mil for cleaning up and disinfecting these centres, and to get hand sanitisers, thermometers and other items," she said after visiting a nursery in Skudai on Tuesday . She added that she was happy with the SOP that had been put in place and urged parents to also follow the new guidelines and only to send their child to the centres when they were well.

Halimah said her ministry ran 41 nurseries between 7.30am and 5pm, and 1,781 kindergartens for preschoolers aged four to six which operate from 7.30am to noon. She added that she was also looking at improving conditions in the kindergartens, including adding more lights to brighten up the classes and help the children with their learning.
