It matters not how you measure that funk; the Astros aren’t sweating the Mariners.Of course, wins over the Mariners or Yankees would be offset by losses to the A’s, whom the Astros face in a three-game series at Oakland beginning Monday. The worst team in the AL claimed two of three against the Astros at Minute Maid Park before the All-Star break.
Houston enters a doubleheader against the Yankees on Thursday 4½ games behind in the chase for the best record in the American League. The Astros won three of the first five games between the teams this season, and they won’t play again unless they meet in the playoffs. These two games were supposed to be played in the first week of the season but were postponed due to the owners’ lockout.Almost all of their important questions have been answered. Justin Verlander is back, and the starting pitching is strong, even without Lance McCullers Jr.
While the offense has been up and down, particularly down early on, the Astros have shown some mettle.With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, perhaps the most that will be gained from Thursday’s games is strategy. Not that the Astros need to be convinced that help at catcher and the bullpen would help in their championship chase.
And, of course, an outfielder who can hit could solidify a lineup that has been inconsistent. The Astros’ championship window, if you believe in such things, remains wide open.
