Some beneficiaries may have a harder time conducting business if a U.S. government shutdown occurs.

A U.S. government shutdown is looming, but Social Security beneficiaries should still expect to get their paychecks. Whether they’ll be able to get any other services from the agency, however, is to be determined.

The Social Security Administration would discontinue benefit verifications, earnings record corrections and updates, Freedom of Information Act requests, replacement Medicare cards and other activities, it said in its contingency plan. However, a shutdown would still have immediate consequences. It would cease food benefits that fall under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children , which supports almost 7 million mothers and infants.

“If field office staffing is reduced, that will have an impact on abilities to get service,” said William Arnone, chief executive officer of the nonpartisan organization National Academy of Social Insurance. “Usually the ones who suffer the most are people trying to get disability benefits.” The agency is already facing a backlog of a million disability claims, and a shutdown would only make it worse, Arnone said.
