Starting August, social media and online messaging platforms with at least eight million users in Malaysia will need to apply for a licence from the

government. This new regulation is introduced by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission as part of a broader framework aimed at creating a safer online environment. Enforcement of this licensing requirement will begin in January 2025.

The MCMC adds that this directive follows a decision by the Malaysian Cabinet, mandating that platforms such as WhatsApp, WeChat, and so on adhere to Malaysian laws to tackle increasing cybercrime, including scams, online fraud, cyberbullying, and sexual crimes against children.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has previously urged social media and online messaging platforms to take greater responsibility in ensuring their platforms are free from criminal activities. This new licensing requirement is a step towards holding these companies accountable and enhancing the safety of the online ecosystem in Malaysia.
