Socceroos star Awer Mabil has been recognised for his refugee advocacy work to be named the 2023 Young Australian of the Year. 7NEWS

Mabil was born in a South Sudanese refugee camp in Kenya after his family fled from civil war in Sudan, before arriving in Australia aged 10.in 2006, Mabil has gone on to enjoy great success in the A-League and with the Socceroos, including playing at the recent FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Since then, Barefoot to Boots has donated over 2000kg in boots, soccer balls and uniforms to the Kakuma camp. “To be able to be named Young Australian of the Year gives me power to continue doing what I’m doing. For me, I love to help people. I’m really motivated to build on from this.”“It has become something more than football. Football is a foundation but through that we help hospitals and equality rights,” Mabil said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese presents the Young Australian of the Year winner to mother Agot Dau Atem and uncle Michael Matiop of Awer Mabil.Two members of the football community, Susan Crow AM and Judge Rauf Soulio AM have received the prestigious Member of the Order of Australia. Queensland duo Andrew Kendall OAM and Owen Pezet OAM, and New South Wales’ David Swan OAM rounded out the recognition as they received the Medal of the Order for services to the community and football.Emeritus Professor Jillianne Leigh Cook, Fairfield, VIC - For significant service to physiotherapy, and to sports medicine.
