Former Contact Energy boss Dennis Barnes will take up the reins as Snowy Hydro faces pressures at two major construction projects.
Snowy chairman David Knox said on Wednesday the board was delighted to secure someone of Mr Barnes’ calibre and extensive energy industry experience to lead the company. Mr Barnes, who left Contact in February 2020 after almost a decade in the top job, is also a former senior executive of Origin and is a non-executive director of Tilt Renewables and Mercury NZ.
“Dennis has over three decades’ experience in the energy sector, with a focus on renewables and retail,” Mr Knox said in a statement. “His appointment brings a wealth of strategic knowledge and proven capability in delivering strong performance across large energy businesses at an exciting time for Snowy Hydro.”Minister for Finance Katy Gallagher, said Mr Barnes had demonstrated strong leadership qualities in the energy sector, and “will help Snowy Hydro continue its work to build Australia’s largest renewable energy storage project and bolster the grid”.
The appointment follows a domestic and international executive search process. Roger Whitby, who has been acting CEO since August, will resume his role as chief operating officer. writes on the resources industry with a focus on energy, including gas, oil, electricity and renewables.
