Permanent fix for frequently snowbound roadway requires co\u002Doperation with airport.

Claypool Drive had to be closed until about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday to allow city crews to clear snow drifts and get stuck vehicles out of the roadway.

“We do need to have a plan in place for next year,” Davies said. “We can’t afford to have the major artery for those neighbourhoods closed.” Goran Saric, director of roadways, fleet and support for the city, said putting up a snow fence or building a snow ridge would likely solve the problem. He said either structure would need to go on the airport’s land adjacent to the road, to give it the proper spacing to prevent drifts.Across the city, Saric said crews were out sanding through the day on Tuesday, with a focus on Priority 1 streets like Circle Drive and Idylwyld Drive.

While snow removal efforts started in January, Saric said staff have had to be diverted to respond to heavy snowfalls since then, plus a recent rut shaving blitz in residential neighbourhoods. With that in mind, he said the city is projecting snow removal will be completed on about 50 to 60 per cent of Priority 2 roads before the spring melt. Priority 2 includes double-lane arterial roads like Clarence Avenue, as well as Saskatoon Transit routes.
