Sally’s appearance, on the other hand, was full of imperfections. But the sum of those imperfections was perfection itself. She was beyond adorable. Their personalities were different too. Pepe loved me, and she was always up for being petted; but she was basically reserved, preferring to survey the world from her chosen domain, a cardboard box atop the refrigerator.
Two years ago, Pepe suddenly started making sounds like a dog barking, and they were not happy ones. I took her to my vet, Dr. Leah Isaacson, and an X-ray revealed a huge tumor in her chest. There was no choice but to put her down right away. Three weeks ago, I took her to see Dr. Isaacson for a routine checkup — nothing special, just a few vaccinations. I could tell she had put on some weight recently, and my main fear was that Dr. Isaacson would tell me to put her on a diet.
She took a few tests and came back with devastating news: Like her sister, Sally had cancer. My only chance, and it was a long shot, was either chemo or major abdominal surgery, neither of which I was willing to put her through.
