SMU Mustangs head football coach Rhett Lashlee oversees his players through a series of drills during a team practice session. The Southern Methodist University Football program began their week-long training camp on the school's campus in Dallas on July 30, 2024. The highest compliment SMU athletic director Rick Hart said he can give Lashlee is that the first two years have gone as expected.
SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods, who was a GA alongside Lashlee at Auburn starting in 2009, said his competitiveness is another. Lashlee has had conversations with Malzahn, former TCU coach Gary Patterson, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and West Virginia coach Neal Brown about the jump his team is set to make and what it takes to thrive in a power conference.
Success in a power conference could mean Lashlee enters the conversation for even bigger potential openings down the line, some as enticing as his alma mater Arkansas or a reunion at Auburn.
