SMU has named Preston Stone its starting quarterback to begin the 2024 season.

Head coach Rhett Lashlee announced the junior quarterback will be SMU’s starter to open the season at Nevada for its Week 0 game on Saturday evening. Stone beat out sophomore Kevin Jennings, who filled in for him during the postseason last year.“Anybody who breaks their leg, it’s going to set them back a little bit. You’ve got to gain that confidence back,” Stone said.
Lashlee said he believes the offense can thrive with either quarterback under center and that the team believes in both of them, voting both quarterbacks captains last week.“Preston’s earned the starting job. Kevin has deserved and earned the right to play, though,” Lashlee said. “It was a really good competition. ... It made everybody better. I think both Preston and Kevin handled it great.”, Dallas Stars and college sports reporter.
