That date, once filled with pain, shame and confusion, has become a positive dividing line three seasons later. “I’m extremely thankful for this opportunity,” Baker said in January 2020. “This is a great ballclub with outstanding players that know how to win. I applaud Jim Crane for the leadership he has shown in recent weeks and look forward to working with him and the players to bring a championship to the city of Houston.”Then the coronavirus pandemic hit and Baker went 29-31 during a severely shortened regular season. Those Astros only made the playoffs because of an expanded postseason field.

The Astros’ final three weeks of their 2020 season said everything about Baker and his connection with a club that traded outside fury for inner togetherness and huge victories.
