Last October, Carolina Barbieri waited at the George R. Brown Convention Center to greet FIFA officials as they toured Houston to evaluate the city’s candidacy to host games in the 2026 World Cup.That is the word Chris Canetti kept repeating as Houston moved closer toward potentially being named a host city for the 2026 World Cup.But the homestretch has finally arrived for the 2026 World Cup announcement, Canetti said Wednesday, and a final answer is expected by late May.
“There’s been lots of different tests along the way here,” said Canetti, president of the Houston World Cup Bid Committee. “Every time we’ve gone through one of these tests, we’ve passed them and done so in a good way.” Houston is one of 17 American finalists in a list that includes New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Cincinnati and Kansas City, Mo. That number will become a final American 10 during an announcement that could be made by early April.The final process is still murky, though, as March approaches.
