Lovie Smith lacked faith in the Texans when his new team needed it most. The first-year head coach prioritized a tie and avoided a potential victory, writes columnist Brian T. Smith.
Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard celebrates after stopping Indianapolis Colts running back Nyheim Hines short of a first down on a 4th and short during the first half of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, in Houston.“There’s a lot of football left to go in the season. It’s kind of as simple as that,” Smith said. “I feel like a tie was better than a potential loss.”
But after insisting all offseason that things will be different this year, Smith began the Texans’ new era by embracing a non-victory, despite the fact the Texans were about 15 yards from game-winning field-goal range in a game they were predicted to lose. “It felt like we had two plays,” Smith said. “It felt like we were in two-down territory before the loss.”Why are the Texans already relying on the 32-year-old Burkhead for ground production after they spent the entire offseason going out of their way to promote rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who was the Week 1 starter?
Culley also kept using Burkhead, even though he’s never been a consistent NFL starter and has never rushed for more than 500 yards in a season.Mills is also supposed to be the future. If not, the Texans will likely be forced to select another QB in the first round of next year’s draft.
