Education Minister Norma Foley will bring the proposals which will be led by parents not buying the devices for primary school children
Cabinet ministers are expected to overwhelmingly approve new guidelines on the banning of smartphones in schools to be brought by Education Minister Norma Foley today.
A source close to Minister Foley said that she is bringing the ban plan to the Cabinet because she wants to send out the message that her proposal has “whole of Government backing.” Ms Foley is basing her proposals on the so-called Greystones model, where all the parents in the area have ganged together and agreed not to buy phones for their children while they are still of primary school age.
The initial focus will be on primary schools, because that is where there is the most consensus on the issue already. “So, it’s one of those things where prevention really is better than cure when they’re in primary school - don’t get it…… But we need strong guidelines, code of conduct, people will obey them then.”
“Children can be exposed to violent and sexual content that no parent would want them to see via their smartphone.
