The sea breeze in your hair and a folk musician swaying and strumming away as the sun sets on the paddy fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. Feels like a quiet getaway from the city?The Padi Music Festival will have some 150 local musicians and singers gathered in the sleepy town of Sekinchan, Selangor on Sept 7 and 8.
With two stages set up – one on the beach and the other in a waterhole in the middle of a paddy field – this scenic destination will soon be buzzing with song, dance, arts and merry-making.But if you are wondering what else you can do there, particularly if you are on a budget, fret not.There is a seaside bazaar, where you can browse handmade arts, paintings and village products, including handicrafts and musical instruments. Food stalls will be set up as well, with traditional delicacies on offer. Not to forget an array of pop-up cafes. Photo: Padi Music Festival “We really wanted something that is set in nature, hence the decision to have it in the paddy fields and on the beach. Come and have a good time, enjoy the music, sea breeze and paddy fields, spend time with family and friends. It is a family-friendly event so everyone can come,” says Kim Wong, Padi Music Festival’s programme coordinator. The idea of having a festival was mooted by local singer-songwriters Chow Kam Leong and Chang Sang Teck, Sekinchan’s creative arts and cultures enthusiast Alan Heng Hua Loon and event curator Peter Teoh. The festival will include a pop-up arts market, featuring anything from handmade clay products to paper craft and sketches to paintings. Photo: Padi Music Festival Expect a variety of music styles and groups, playing an array of folk songs, oldies, pop tunes, jazz groups and rock bands. “We have so much talent in Malaysia, and not all have had the recognition they deserve. This festival aims to serve as a platform to promote local talent, both established and emerging musicians – all set against Sekinchan’s beautiful backdrop,” says Wong. The Padi Music Festival is organised by the Padi Music Empire, together with Khind Starfish Foundation. It is hosted by the Sekinchan Tourism Development Association and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
