Dear Care and Feeding: Is there any way around this?
Dear Care and Feeding,
Of course, every child is different and every sensory problem is different, so I can’t comment on the severity of what your kid is going through. If you weigh the pros and cons and feel you have to be a no-sleepover household, that’s fine. However, if your biggest issue is a messed-up sleep schedule once every two months or so, then I would say to accept the temporary upset and let your kid be a kid. What will happen when your child goes on vacation, to summer camps, college, etc.
You didn’t include a lot of detail in here about what exactly your MIL is doing to get under your skin, but I’ll have to assume it’s pretty bad if it prompted you to write in. Also, I wonder if your husband empathizes with your point of view or thinks you’re being unreasonable. But I also want you to consider this: Unless she’s abusive or reckless, you can’t totally keep your MIL out of her grandkids’ lives—especially if your husband wants to maintain a relationship with her—and I’m not sure you should want to. You don’t have to like the woman or even engage with her that much—you can use the time she visits to leave the house and engage in some personal self-care .
