Sky News Australia Political Editor Andrew Clennell has reacted to Labor's 2023-24 budget, saying Treasurer Jim Chalmers is “taxing the rich and giving to the poor' but without endangering the government's chances at the next election.

Reacting to the budget after being freed from lock-up, Clennell compared Treasurer Jim Chalmers to the heroic outlaw from English folklore.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has delivered a"Robin Hood budget", according to Andrew Clennell. Picture: Sky News Australia Among the assistance is a $40 per fortnight increase to JobSeeker and Youth Allowance and a 15 per cent rise to Rent Assistance . As the government announced on Monday, financial support for single parents will continue until their youngest child is 14, rather than the current age of eight.

This involves $3.5 billion to help GPs provide free consultations to about 11.6 million eligible Australians including children, pensioners and other concession card holders. And then there are the already flagged changes to the petroleum and resource rent tax – worth $2.4 billion over five years – the changes to superannuation tax concessions for people with balances over $3 million, and the five per cent increase in tobacco tax.
