Electric vehicles can be mini power plants on wheels to respond to days-long power outages and rolling blackouts.
That’s why I’m authoring legislation this year,, to require all new EVs sold in the state by 2030 to have the ability to power a home or business. This technology is known as bidirectional charging or vehicle-to-home charging. SB 233 has passed the state Senate and is now in the Assembly.
EVs obviously require electricity to charge their batteries. However, the burden many new EVs might put on our electricity grid could be offset if car owners charge their EVs during non-peak electricity-use hours and then use the batteries in their EV to power their homes during peak electricity demand.
