People run past burning vehicles during a protest to condemn the alleged killing of women and children, in Imphal, capital of India's violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur on Nov. 16. Six bodies of women and children were recovered as ethnic violence escalated between indigenous Christians and Meitei Hindus inSeveral churches and homes, including those of legislators, were set on fire in the past three days, Church leaders say.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh convened an emergency meeting on Nov. 18 as violence and arson continued in different parts of the state, and seven legislators of the National People’s Party , his government's alliance partner, withdrew their support to the government. The bodies of the six were recovered three days later from Jiribam district, the epicenter of fresh violence.
The violence led to the imposition of a curfew, a shutdown of the internet, and the closure of schools and business establishments., said they were facing a shortage of vegetables and other essential commodities, and prices had skyrocketed.The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum said Meitei militants on Nov. 16 burnt down “at least five churches, one school, a petrol pump and 14 homes belonging to the Kuki-Zo communities in Jiribam.
The state has continued to witness sporadic violence that claimed the lives of over 230 and displaced 60,000, a majority of them Christians.
