There's no denying the impact New Mexico State transfer Sir'Jabari Rice has had on Texas this season. As one Hall of Famer recently put it, 'He's got to be the best sixth man in the country.'

Texas guard Sir'Jabari Rice, right, drives to the basket against Kansas forward Jalen Wilson, left, during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in Austin, Texas, Saturday, March 4, 2023. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The slippery sixth man who rode in from New Mexico State this past offseason could still hardly believe his new reality.

After five prosperous years with the Aggies, the Longhorns finally came calling. And following last Saturday’s regular-season finale, in which the Big 12’s sixth man of the year cooked No. 3 Kansas with 23 points in a 75-59 win at the Moody Center, an emotional Rice spoke straight from the heart. And to be sure, Rice needed that time in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He needed the redshirt year, the fine-tuning, the strength training and diet overhaul. He spent those years polishing skills on both ends and working to perfect the devastating shot fake he pirated from Fort Bend Marshall teammate John Walker III.

Rice had already forged a tight bond with Texas super senior forward Timmy Allen, the younger brother of his former NMSU teammate Teddy “Buckets” Allen. And whatever imaginary eggshells dotted the team’s practice court and locker room quickly vanished as former coach Chris Beard and his staff implored Rice to speak with his chest and become a leader.
