A massive sinkhole near Tokyo, Japan, has trapped a truck driver and forced the evacuation of multiple households. Rescue efforts to reach the driver have been temporarily halted due to the discovery of sewage water and concerns about the sinkhole's stability.

A sinkhole near Tokyo , Japan , has swallowed a truck driver and continues to expand at an alarming rate. The 74-year-old driver was trapped inside the cavity on Tuesday, and since then, the sinkhole has grown to 40 meters (130 feet) across, almost the size of an Olympic swimming pool. Rescue rs initially made progress on Saturday by constructing a 30-meter slope to deploy heavy equipment and reach the trapped driver.

However, the mission was suspended on Sunday due to the discovery of a significant amount of sewage water underneath the slope, compounded by ongoing rainfall. The unstable walls of the sinkhole, estimated to be around 15 meters deep, present a constant danger to rescue workers, limiting their time inside the chasm. The initial diameter of the sinkhole was five meters, but it has merged with a larger cavity that opened overnight during the Tuesday rescue operation. Authorities have urged approximately 1.2 million people living in the vicinity to reduce their water consumption, particularly showers and laundry, to prevent leaking sewage from hindering the rescue efforts. Five households directly adjacent to the sinkhole have been ordered to evacuate, in addition to other residents within a 50-meter radius who are strongly encouraged to leave their homes.
