About three in 10 of the current cases are reinfections – higher than the 20 to 25 per cent seen during the last wave, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said.
He provided the updates on Friday at the National Healthcare Group’s population health collective annual workplan seminar. He also addressed comments by some people who have attributed the recent rise in local infections mostly to travellers bringing in the virus. “The understanding that this caused a rise in infection is incorrect. The virus is endemic, which means it is always circulating within our community. In such a situation, what drives our local waves is not imported infections, but reinfection of existing individuals in the community,” said Ong.
