Singapore has backed the Albanese government over the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines, undercutting former prime minister Paul Keating ’s claim that Australia was at odds with the region over the China -US strategic rivalry . ASEAN ’s elder statesman, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong , advised China to drop its last trade sanctions against Australia and emphasised Australia ’s key role in supporting security and stability in the region that spanned several generations.
“I’ve said before, and I repeated to the Prime Minister on this visit, that when the Australian new submarines are ready, we welcome them to visit Changi naval base in due course,” Mr Lee said.Less than an hour later, former Labor prime minister Mr Keating overshadowed the summit by calling for Australia’s spy chiefs to be sacked for showing “utter contempt” for Canberra’s efforts to stabilise ties with Beijin
