In six days, the onetime annual border rivals will resume a series that's been dormant for 31 years. That's an awfully long time. And the positions of not just the programs but the universities have changed radically.

Sophomore quarterback Kerry Collins , making the first start of what would be a decorated Penn State career, celebrates with tight end Troy Drayton after they teamed on a 72-yard screen pass for a score during a hard-fought 40-26 win at West Virginia in 1992. Saturday night's game at Beaver Stadium will be the first time the two schools have met in football since.

Back in the 1980s and even for a time into this century, West Virginia was a perennial power, too. There was a time not so long ago when some of the poorer communities produced some of the best athletes, particularly football players. WVU got its share of steel town Rust Belt kids when its region had only just become known by that name. Their mix of toughness with a little speed was usually enough.

But in the era of play-for-pay, it looks increasingly bleak for towns and states where money is tight and big-money donors are few and far between. West Virginia is one of those places. Where Gee predicted a sharp enrollment increase upon his return to WVU in 2014, it has actually decreased sharply to 21,000 undergrads on the main Morgantown campus. He’s announced a plan to fire one-sixth of the university’s faculty and discontinue one-tenth of the school’s majors.

But Brown has not been able to power up the Mountaineers. They have suffered three losing seasons out of four. He is the first WVU head coach in more than four decades to compile a losing record .
