In six days, the onetime annual border rivals will resume a series that's been dormant for 31 years. That's an awfully long time. And the positions of not just the programs but the universities have changed radically.

Back in the 1980s and even for a time into this century, West Virginia was a perennial power, too. Where Gee predicted a sharp enrollment increase upon his return to WVU in 2014, it has actually decreased sharply to 21,000 undergrads on the main Morgantown campus. He’s announced a plan to fire one-sixth of the university’s faculty and discontinue one-tenth of the school’s majors.
But Brown has not been able to power up the Mountaineers. They have suffered three losing seasons out of four. He is the first WVU head coach in more than four decades to compile a losing record .
