A relieved and redemptive United States team rolls
Simone Biles runs with the flag after the United States won gold during the gymnastics team competition PARIS – As luck would have it, the first rotation Tuesday in the Olympic team all-around final for Simone Biles and the U.S. women’s gymnasts was the vault.
Cecile Landi, Biles’ coach at her Houston gym, admitted a similar sentiment. “I’m not going to lie, it did cross my mind,” she said. “After she vaulted, I thought: ‘Well, it’s a better start than three years ago.’”Which they did. A relieved and redemptive U.S. team rolled from there, already leading by 1.5 points after the first rotation and easily securing the gold with 171.296, nearly six more than Italy in second and Brazil in third.
And then Biles, who was, wait, sitting on the ground with the left calf she tweaked during Sunday’s preliminaries encased in some sort of black therapeutic boot.It wasn’t their best night, but it didn’t need to be with a wildly partisan crowd chanting “U-S-A, U-S-A” and a diluted international field. In fact, the Americans downgraded the difficulty on a few routines and were a full point worse Tuesday than in Sunday’s prelims with the same lineup.
Simone Biles of the United States competes on the floor exercise during the gymnastics team competition in Barcy Arena during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. United States won the gold medal. “We all knew she could do it. That wasn’t ever a question in my mind that she could do it, and it continues to just solidify her place as the greatest gymnast of all the time.”The numbers echo that. This is her fifth gold and eighth Olympic medal, surpassing Shannon Miller as the most decorated U.S. gymnast in history. Biles also, a journalist pointed out, has a combined 38 medals from Olympics and world championships, more than the entire U.S. men’s team combined.
Biles left the arena Sunday with a noticeable limp, but she seemed to be walking fine Tuesday when the athletes paraded in.
