Prominent First Nations leader Pat Turner has warned governments around the country to stop dragging their feet and “get their skates on” to eradicate Indigenous disadvantage, urging a Yes vote for the Voice to bolster progress on Closing the Gap.

“I’m sick of good intentions, the slowness of the jurisdictions. They just have to get much better at embracing change and changing the way they work with our people.” Thorpe was wrong to suggest sovereignty would be impacted because “the legal experts have clearly advised on that”, Turner said.“The media needs to sit up and take a more responsible role in what sort of country we want to be … Do we want to keep on having Aboriginal people at the bottom of the pile? People [internationally] are watching and Australia never got so much kudos as when the national apology was given.

But she says governments need to get their central agencies more fully engaged in driving progress for Indigenous Australians, particularly through mainstream intergovernmental agreements in education and housing.
