SIBU: The Sibu Royal Customs Department seized 1,200 sacks of smuggled Thai white rice worth RM258,000, including import duties, at Jalan Upper Lanang.
State director, Datuk Sharifah Halimah Yuanku Taha said the seizure was made at about 10am on Wednesday following a tip-off from the public.
"Our men have tried to trace the owner of the containers but failed as nobody has come forward to claim them," she said. "The modus operandi used by the smugglers was to prevent individuals or importers from being arrested when a raid is conducted," she said. Sharifah said the department was serious in tackling rice smuggling activities which were becoming rampant.She added that there was high demand for smuggled rice that fetched cheaper prices.
