Two suspects are at large after a shooting at the Clemenceau metro station in Brussels, Belgium. While no injuries were reported, the incident caused widespread disruption to the city's metro system. Authorities are investigating the shooting, but there is currently no evidence to suggest a terrorist motive.
Belgian police were on the hunt for two suspects on Wednesday after a shooting near the Brussels South international railway station. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 am (0500 GMT), took place at the Clemenceau metro station in central Brussels . Prosecutors said that while nobody was injured, two men carrying machine guns were seen fleeing into the station. The investigation is ongoing and there are no indications of a terrorist motive at this time.
Initially, police launched a manhunt in the metro system tunnels, which were partially closed following the shooting. Broadcaster VRT reported that the shooting was likely drug-related, stating that the shooters aimed at one individual but missed. VRT presented footage on its website depicting two men entering the Clemenceau metro station and firing automatic weapons. The Clemenceau station, along with several others in the vicinity, were shut down for several hours following the incident. Another video showed a large contingent of heavily armed police assembling at the Clemenceau station as a massive search for the suspects commenced. The incident significantly disrupted traffic on Brussels' heavily used metro system, which serves many European Union institutions and NATO's headquarters. By 2 pm (1300 GMT), the entire city metro system, including stations around the Gare du Midi international train station – the arrival point for Eurostar trains from Paris and London – had reopened
