Shohei Ohtani makes blunder as first baserunner under MLB's new extra-inning rule

The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels became the first teams to experience baseball's new rule for the 2020 season.

Tied at three after nine innings Friday, the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels became the first teams to experience baseball's new rule for the 2020 season: that all extra innings will begin with a runner on second base.

Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who made the last out in the ninth inning, was placed on second to start the top of the 10th with Jared Walsh leading off for Los Angeles. Walsh hit a ground ball to the right side and rather than going for the easy out, Athletics first baseman Matt Olson threw to third as Ohtani tried to advance. The throw beat the runner by a long way, forcing Ohtani to turn back to second base. Caught in a rundown, Ohtani was tagged out by third baseman Matt Chapman.

And just like that, the Angels no longer had a free man in scoring position and failed to score in the inning.
