Women’s world No.1 Iga Swiatek has marched to the third round of the Australian Open with a straight sets victory over Camila Osorio.
A physically restricted Rafael Nadal has crashed out of the Australian Open in the second round after losing to American world No.65 Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets.
Rafael Nadal waves as he leaves Rod Laver Arena following his straight sets second-round loss to 27-year-old American Mackenzie McDonald.“I was not able to hit the backhand at all. I was not able to run for the ball. I didn’t want to retire defending champion here,” Nadal said. “I am out of the tournament. [McDonald] is in the third round, so well done for him. He was playing a great level of tennis. Life continues for me.”McDonald, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2021, paid tribute to Nadal, who steamrolled him in their only other encounter at the second round of the French Open in 2020.
The 27-year-old will play either Japanese world no.33 Yoshihito Nishioka or Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina in the third round after taking the biggest scalp of his career.
