A senior female member of a NSW regional branch of the Liberal Party resigns over claims she was told to go on a crash diet and to make way for male candidates.

Shoalhaven Independent Jemma Tribe says she was told to "crash diet" during state government preselections.

Ms Tribe, who has previously sought state and federal preselection and is running as an independent candidate at the NSW local government election, wrote that she was told people thought she was "kind but not strong enough". "A few of us tried to establish Winning Women, based on the UK's Women to Win, in an effort to boost the number of young women in the party," she wrote."While I have been long disillusioned with the party, I have been determined to stay and help rebuild. But unfortunately there appears to be no real acknowledgement of the underlying issues.

"I haven't spoken to her personally about any of the issues that she's raised. I would have loved to if she felt that way but was never given that opportunity," Ms Copley said.Joanna Gash, former federal Liberal member for Gilmore from 1996 to 2013, and Shoalhaven mayor from 2012 to 2016, sympathised with Ms Tribe."It's not an easy thing to do, but I understand where she is coming from.
