Venezuelan migrants Peter Gomez and Angelica Perez with her two-year-old son, Angel Silva, wait outside the City of San Antonio’s Migrant Resource Center - a transitional facility to help lawful, asylum-seeking migrants with services to help them get to their respective destinations after being processed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security.
The sheriff announced the investigation Monday, saying a migrant was paid a “birddog” fee to recruit 50 others around city’s Migrant Resource Center, at 7000 San Pedro Ave. In total, 48 were “lured,” the sheriff said, under false pretenses.Salazar was not immediately able to say what statute was broken, but he said what was done to the migrants was wrong from a human rights perspective.More migrants sent to Vice President Kamala Harris' D.C.
“They were lured by promises of a better life with the knowledge they could cling to whatever they were offered just to be exploited and hoodwinked,” he said. The sheriff said it was “too early” to start naming suspects. Investigators have been in talks with Boston-based attorney Rachel Self, who is representing some of the migrants, to get an idea of what occurred in Bexar County, including what was said leading up to the migrants’ exodus to Florida.
