League of Ireland clubs Shelbourne and St Patrick’s Athletic on Monday issued a joint statement condemning an incident ahead of last Friday’s derby.
Shelbourne and St Patrick’s Athletic say they are determined to “help eradicate racism” - after a shocking incident ahead of last Friday’s Dublin derby at Richmond Park.
Damien Duff addressed it after his side’s win sent them five points clear at the top of the table when he said: “Tonight, Mauro, our fitness coach, not one of the best in the league, indeed one of the best in the world, from Portugal, got racially abused.“That’s why our win made it a special night, not for the club really but for him. That's all I’ll say on the matter. I’ll leave it with whoever the relevant people are.
“On Friday evening before the start of the match a juvenile shouted some racial abuse at a Shels staff member. St Pats fans and stewards immediately intervened. This conduct is not acceptable, and the guardians of the child have been asked to engage with him to ensure he understands the gravity of the situation and that this type of behaviour is not acceptable.“Racism has no place in our clubs, our sport, or society as a whole.
